Gael’s Comeback

After a long absence (We missed you, La Monf!) due to a wrist injury, Gaël makes his comeback on the courts at the Indian Wells tournament in March 2023.

Unfortunately, he is eliminated in the first round by Jordan Thompson
(6-3, 6-1).

To motivate himself and get back in shape, he then participates in the Challenger tournament in Phoenix. His opponent, Alexander Shevchenko, wins the match in the first round despite Gaël winning the second set (4-6, 7-6, 6-3).

It’s a rather timid start, as he is not “100% comfortable with his body.”

With Gaël’s desire to play still strong, he continues with the Miami tournament. In the first round against his fellow countryman Ugo Humbert, he withdraws after six games (3-3). A tough blow for this comeback.

After some introspection, Monfils makes big decisions about his future in tennis.

Heel Pain Issues: An Update

For his return to the Tour, Gaël played the Masters 1000 event in Madrid where he lost to Novak Djokovic in the last 16.

Due to the ongoing pain he experienced from his right heel, he decided to withdraw from the 2022 edition of the French Open. He would then miss the grass season including Queen’s, Eastbourne and Wimbledon.

At that stage, he was still hoping to return for the European Clay season where he entered Hamburg in Germany and Kitzbühel in Austria. However, the pain was still there, and he could not participate in those tournaments.

After a three months absence, Gaël was back on court at the end of July to prepare for the US Open Series. He played the Rogers Cup in both singles and doubles.

He posted some strong wins before having to retire against Jack Draper in the last 16. He was not able to continue in doubles either where he had partnered with French player Benjamin Bonzi.

Spring Tournament News

Gaël Monfils flew to the US at the start of March for the US swing. It is always a special moment of the season for him as he has always enjoyed tremendous support from the American crowd over the years.

Gaël performed really well by defeating world number one Daniil Medvedev in the 3rd round. He was then beaten by future world number one Carlos Alcaraz in the last 16.

He played his next event in Miami at the end of the month. He defeated Oscar Otte from Germany in the 2nd round before losing to Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo in the last 16.

Back in Europe, Gaël Monfils travelled to Monte-Carlo for the Masters 1000 where he was scheduled to play his first round match against Hubert Hurkacz.

Due to a foot injury which prevented him from moving freely, and after consulting the doctors, he was forced to retire. The injury was later diagnosed as right heel spur and would continue to cause him trouble over the course of the season.

Gaël was forced to leave the Tour for some time before coming back in Madrid for the Masters 1000.

The 2022 Australian Open

Gaël Monfils trained in the off-season with his team made of Günter Bresnik, Richard Ruckelshausen, Dominik Distelberger and Nathanaël Pierre at Tenerife Top Training, a facility located in the South of the Spanish island.

After a period of intense conditioning, Gaël arrived fully prepared both physically and mentally to play the Australian Open Series.

The number one French player started the year in full strength by winning his first tournament of the year in Adelaide. He defeated Karen Kachanov in the final which lasted one hour and nineteen minutes. Gaël did not drop a set on his way to the title after defeating Juan Manuel Cerundolo (90e mondial), Tommy Paul (43e mondial) et Thanasi Kokkinakis (171e mondial).

It was mission accomplished for Gaël who had promised to arrive “on top of his form right from the start of the year” after being forced to withdraw at the Paris Masters two months earlier against Novak Djokovic. It was Gaël 11th career title and the perfect start of the season.

For 17 consecutive seasons, Gaël has reached at last one final. In terms of achievement, this puts him just behind Rafaël Nadal who has done so for 18 consecutive seasons.

His next stop was Melbourne and the Australian Open. Surfing on his current form, Gaël beat Federico Coria in the 1st round, Alexander Bublik in the 2nd round, Cristian Garin in the 3rd round and Miomir Kecmanovic in the last 16. Sadly, Gaël’s tournament ended in the quarter final after losing a five set battle to Matteo Berretini.
