The 2022 Australian Open

Gaël Monfils trained in the off-season with his team made of Günter Bresnik, Richard Ruckelshausen, Dominik Distelberger and Nathanaël Pierre at Tenerife Top Training, a facility located in the South of the Spanish island.

After a period of intense conditioning, Gaël arrived fully prepared both physically and mentally to play the Australian Open Series.

The number one French player started the year in full strength by winning his first tournament of the year in Adelaide. He defeated Karen Kachanov in the final which lasted one hour and nineteen minutes. Gaël did not drop a set on his way to the title after defeating Juan Manuel Cerundolo (90e mondial), Tommy Paul (43e mondial) et Thanasi Kokkinakis (171e mondial).

It was mission accomplished for Gaël who had promised to arrive “on top of his form right from the start of the year” after being forced to withdraw at the Paris Masters two months earlier against Novak Djokovic. It was Gaël 11th career title and the perfect start of the season.

For 17 consecutive seasons, Gaël has reached at last one final. In terms of achievement, this puts him just behind Rafaël Nadal who has done so for 18 consecutive seasons.

His next stop was Melbourne and the Australian Open. Surfing on his current form, Gaël beat Federico Coria in the 1st round, Alexander Bublik in the 2nd round, Cristian Garin in the 3rd round and Miomir Kecmanovic in the last 16. Sadly, Gaël’s tournament ended in the quarter final after losing a five set battle to Matteo Berretini.
